Change Log:
18-05-2026: v4.3.3 LCS-sf: Both bm (big monitor), a version suitable for Bigger monitor of 23" and above had slightly different layout. They are now merged. A new red font / green highlight is added when there is no functional difference i.e. there is no spelling mistake. Appears when the words have anusvaara instead of halant or vice versa. Or it is the use of hyphen, just to break the word. An example is -
संस्कारदुःखम् vs संस्कारदुःखं
सन्तापात्मिका vs संतापात्मिका
कार्य-कारित्वम् vs कार्यकारित्वम्
kārya-kāritvam vs kāryakāritvam
उदारत्वं सहकारिसंनिधिवशात्कार्य-कारित्वमित्यर्थः ॥ ४ ॥ vs उदारत्वं सहकारिसंनिधिवशात्कार्यकारित्वमित्यर्थः ॥ ४ ॥
19-04-2026: v4.0.0 LCS-sf pane1: Now highlights words in Compare panes on akshara-level and not word level. It highlights only differently spelled letters in word and not the whole word. Also retains the highlights of differently spelled letters in word pairs. E.g. अहङ्कार or अहंकार and not अहङ्कार and अहंकार. This is true only for pairs copied ot Devanāgarī pane via Compare Button and not via Copy button which simply copies word pairs on clipboard.
17-04-2026: v3.2.8: Full Working suite with integrated panes for Text Comparison and Transliteration cum Spell check.
09-04-2026: v1.0.4: First version that was uploaded. Contained only two panes at bottom, Devanāgarī and IAST Roman.

Either use the tool on this page or download it on your Desktop PC.
These are HTML files. For each tool, there is one HTML file. So it is easy to use, move to another folder or share with someone.
Click on download button on top and bottom of this page. This takes you to Google Drive folder which has few files.
Select required file. For suite, select file with
File Name: sanskrit_proofreading_suite_v4_0 LCS-sf Pane1.html --> combined suite (version no may be same or higher, refer change log)
Simply download html file(s) --> Double click --> Opens in Default browser. Start using it. Once it loads, it works fully offline. No internet required.
On Left Pane (source) --> Copy the source or reference Sanskrit text against which the new text needs to be proof read.
On Right pane (target) --> Copy the Sanskrit text which you need to check for spelling mistakes / typos.
Press Compare button
In a new window both texts will be displayed with words that have different spelling or they have different spacing.
To understand, click the "Load Sample" button.
A truncated sample text from "Load Sample" button is taken up as an example:
Source Text:
Target Text:
The differently spelled same Sanskrit words are also copied in the next html tool (Devanāgarī Pane 1) retaining the highlights of differently spelled words. The compare button also triggers transliteration from Devanāgarī to Roman IAST. The compare button also triggers spell check pane (pane 3) and the words appear in IAST Roman in pane 3 too.
An example:

Putting differently spelled word pairs one below another is better for spell check then to look and compare output panes.
After checking the first pair (compare with each other or with print editions or PDFs of print editions), Delete them, delete first two lines and delete the empty line in pane 1 (Devanāgarī pane) and then click the button "Devanāgarī to Roman". The results from above example would be -

Similarly, delete each pair after proofreading and click "Devanāgarī to Roman" button.
Rest is Self Explanatory.
Limitations:
Though care has been taken to make it as accurate as possible, the tool may not be perfect, so one needs to check things manually.
Devanāgarī to Roman IAST works well, but at times the reverse Roman IAST to Devanāgarī does not render transliteration correctly and may retain English / Latin characters along with Devanāgarī letters in a word.
Panes 1 and 2 are dual use panes and can be independently used to transliterate any text from Devanāgarī to Roman and vice versa. It is bi-directional.
These panes are connected with buttons - "Devanāgarī to Roman" and "Roman to Devanāgarī". Use them appropriately.
Click Load Sample buttons to understand what they do.
This tool can be used independently.
Type or paste sanskrit words in left pane and click Devanāgarī to Roman Button or
Type or paste in right pane and click Roman to Devanāgarī Button.
Likewise, panes 2 and 3 are also connected. Whatever is typed in pane 2, gets spelled checked in pane 3. Ignore pane 3 if not needed.
Spell Check (pane 3) is READ ONLY
Type or paste sanskrit words in IAST Roman in pane 2, one word per line - Source in odd lines (1,3,5, etc) and Target in even lines (2,4,6, etc)
The words will auto populate in pane 3 (spell check) and different letters will be marked.
For example:
Rāma
Rām
Rama
Rāma
I hope this tool helps proofreading.

Those interested can read more details which is like a short manual. It also mentions why this tool was created.
It mentions the other tools.
This suite brings together three practical tools in one place to help you proofread Sanskrit texts and work comfortably with both Devanāgarī and IAST Roman scripts:
Top panel: From v 4.0.0, the tool compares two Sanskrit passages (source vs. target) and instantly highlights every spelling or spacing difference in akshara-level and not word level, meaning in case of भोगि and भोगो it highlights only the differently spelled letters in the word and not the complete word pairs भोगि and भोगो or अहङ्कार or अहंकार and not अहङ्कार and अहंकार
Bottom panel (three panes):
Pane 1 – Devanāgarī (Dual use in v4.0.0)
Pane 2 – IAST Roman (Dual use in v4.0.0 - drives the spell checker)
Pane 3 – Live comparative spell checker, not a dictionary check (read-only)
The tools are integrated: differences found in the comparison are automatically sent to the transliteration pane for easy review in both scripts.
Many valuable Sanskrit commentaries (such as Yoga Sudhākara by Sadāśiva Brahmendra on Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras) exist only in old scanned books with imperfect OCR. This tool was made to quickly spot typos, spacing errors, and variant readings so scholars and students can focus on study rather than correction. By comparing 2 OCRs, one which is supposedly proofread is treated as source and another is the new copy of same commentary, same text scanned by another OCR or manually typed. This helps spot typing errors.
In Devanāgarī tool (pane 1) of bottom section, differently spelled words are now copied retaining highlighted differently spelled letters on akshara-level than full highlighting.
In the spell check tool, IAST Roman is spell checked and not Devanāgarī.
Word-by-word and spacing difference highlighting (source in turquoise, target in yellow), highlights on akshara-level, not word level.
Options to ignore sūtra numbers (॥ X ॥) and line prefixes (3.41. etc.)
Preserve original line breaks
Adjustable font size for comfortable Devanāgarī reading
Automatic transfer of differing words to the transliteration tool retaining the highlights in differently spelled letters in word pair. (v4.0.0)
Bidirectional Devanāgarī ↔ IAST Roman conversion
Live comparative spell checker for IAST Roman word pairs
Completely offline – no internet or external files required
Simple copy buttons for all results
Paste your reference text (trusted version) into the left pane (Source).
Paste the text you want to check (e.g., OCR output) into the right pane (Target).
Choose your options at the top:
Ignore sūtra numbers
Ignore line prefixes
Preserve line breaks
Click Compare.
Differences are highlighted in the output panels below.
Differing words are automatically copied into the transliteration tool (bottom panel) for instant review in both scripts.
Use Copy differently spelled words if you need the list in your clipboard.
Load Sample – loads a real example from Yoga Sudhākara (PYS 3.35/3.37)
Clear – resets both input panes
Pane 1 – Devanāgarī
Type or paste Devanāgarī text.
Click Devanāgarī to Roman ↓ → result appears in Pane 2.
Pane 2 – IAST Roman (connected to both pane 1 and pane 3)
Type or paste IAST text.
Click Roman to Devanāgarī ↑ → result appears in Pane 1.
For spell checking: paste source words on odd lines and target words on even lines (one word per line). The spell checker (pane 3) updates automatically.
Pane 3 – Spell Check (read-only)
Shows character-level differences automatically as you type in Pane 2.
Source differences appear in turquoise with red text.
Target differences appear in yellow with red text.
If everything matches: “✓ All pairs match — no spelling differences found” is displayed along with the pair.
Quick buttons (for each pane):
Copy – copies the current pane’s content
Clear – clears that pane only
Load Sample – loads helpful test words or pairs
Font size control (shared for all three bottom panes): Use the − / + buttons for comfortable reading. This can be helpful in long hours when our eyes are strained and brain is fatigued.
The tool is designed to be as accurate as possible, yet it is not a dictionary-based spell checker. It performs comparative checking only.
Devanāgarī → IAST Roman conversion works very reliably. The reverse (IAST Roman → Devanāgarī) occasionally retains a few Latin characters; if this happens, please kindly report the exact pair to indiaspirituality [at] gmail.com so the tool can be improved.
Always do a final manual review of important texts. Check from Print editions, physical books.
Created with humility and devotion by Amrut (Indiaspirituality Blog) for like minded seekers of truth. I hope this simple offline tool makes your study of Sanskrit texts a little easier and more joyful.
May it serve well in your scholarly and spiritual pursuits.
There are other tools which work as standalone tools. they are a part of this proofreading suite. If you are using Proofreading suite, you already know how to use them
File Name: sanskrit_proofreading_suite_v4_0 LCS-sf Pane1.html --> combined suite
Already explained in detail. Just mentioned here to align with file names.
File Name: sanskrit_diff_checker_v1_2_1 FINAL.html --> Sanskrit Text Comparison Tool
This is just the top panel of the suite, but it highlights a full word and not the differently spelled letters.
Click "Load sample" button for Demo texts in both panes (source and target).
File Name #1: devanagari_iast_converter_v1_2_2.html
File Name #2: devanagari_iast_converter_v1_2_2 LARGE WINDOW.html
There are two versions v1.2.0 has a shorter window, useful for Sūtra or śloka transliteration and v1.2.1 has a larger window.
Type or paste Devanāgarī text in Left Pane or IAST Roman on right pane and click the appropriate button.
Click "Load sample" button for Demo words.
File Name: roman_iast_deva_comparative_spell_checker_v1_0_0-LCS-sf.htm
In this tool, simply type or paste either Devanāgarī or IAST Roman or mixed text in pairs. Odd numbers are the source words and even nos are for the target words. Both results are checked On the fly as you type and so there is no need for a button.
Click "Load Sample" button for Demo word pairs.
I hope they are useful. Feel free to share these tools with like-minded people.
A gentle reminder: Tools may be updated, so please check version numbers and change log (which is mentioned on top of this page.

Sanskrit Proofreading Suite
Conceptualized and Released on 09-Apr-2026 with Sanskrit Text Difference checker (Comparison tool)
Updated on 12-Apr-2026 with 2 Bottom panes for Transliteration
Released as suite with three bottom panes on 21-Apr-2026 on Śrī Ādi Śankarāchārya Jayanti
Latest Version: v4.3.3-LCS-sf
Changes from v4.3.2:
- Bottom section cleaned up: removed redundant green "word" convention line
from description block; removed Source/Target colour badges from Pane 1
and Pane 3 title rows (legend in top section covers all three panes).
- Pane 3 title row now reads simply: Spell Check | READ ONLY.
- Pane 1 title row now reads: Devanāgarī | anusvāra ↔ halant | hyphen.
- .iast-panel-top CSS changed from flex-direction:column to flex-direction:row
(title left, buttons right on one line) — eliminates need for a separate
big-monitor version; both are now one unified file.
- Version string updated to v4.3.3-LCS-sf throughout.
- All other features, buttons, and logic unchanged.
Changes from v4.3.1:
- Green convention highlighting now also covers hyphen vs no-hyphen differences
(e.g. कार्य-कारित्वम् vs कार्यकारित्वम्) — same red/green scheme.
Both anusvāra↔halant and hyphen variants are pure editorial conventions.
- Pane 1 (Devanāgarī) title row: green label updated to red font on green
background (consistent with highlight colour), text reads
"anusvāra ↔ halant | hyphen".
- Top legend and bottom section note updated to mention hyphen variant.
- Version string updated to v4.3.2-LCS-sf throughout.
- All other features, buttons, and logic unchanged.
Changes from v4.3.0:
- Green convention highlighting now marks only the differing character(s)
(e.g. only म् vs ं, or m vs ṃ), not the entire word — consistent with
the behaviour of the red/turquoise and red/yellow highlights.
- Pane 1 (Devanāgarī) title row: added "anusvāra ↔ halant" label after
the Source/Target badges, visible at all times.
- Top section btn-row: added "Clear All" button (dark magenta font) after
the existing "Clear" button. Clear All triggers clearAll() + clearDevPane()
+ clearIastPane(), resetting the entire suite in one click.
The existing "Clear" button (top section only) is unchanged.
- Version string updated to v4.3.1-LCS-sf throughout.
- All other features, buttons, and logic unchanged.
Changes from v4.2.2:
- All three sections (top compare, Devanāgarī pane 1, IAST spell check pane 3):
Added a third highlight category — RED font + GREEN background — for word pairs
whose ONLY difference is an anusvāra/halant-nasal convention difference
(e.g. संस्कारदुःखं vs संस्कारदुःखम्, सन्तापात्मिका vs संतापात्मिका).
These are editorial/orthographic convention differences, not errors.
- New CSS classes: .conv-diff (Section 1 top), .dev-conv (Pane 1), .sc-conv (Pane 3).
- Legend in Section 1 updated with a third green swatch.
- Version string updated to v4.3.0-LCS-sf throughout.
- All other features, buttons, and logic unchanged.
Changes from v4.2.1:
- Bottom section Spell Check Pane (Pane 3): Added "Total lines" and
"Total pairs" counters below the pane, matching the style of Pane 1.
Counters update live on every edit and on Clear/Load Sample.
- Bottom section Devanāgarī Pane (Pane 1): Placeholder text now has a
second line instructing independent use: "To use this pane
independently, type any Sanskrit words in Devanāgarī and click
the button 'Devanāgarī to Roman'."
- Version string updated to v4.2.2-LCS-sf throughout.
- All other features, buttons, and logic unchanged.
Changes from v4.2.0:
- All buttons now have tooltips (title attributes).
- Section 1: Clear Source / Clear Target panel buttons: removed ✕ symbol
to match the shared Clear button style in the btn-row.
- Bottom section Devanāgarī Pane: "Total lines" / "Total pairs" counter
text now uses font-size 14px and font-family Noto Sans, Arial, sans-serif,
colour #2d6a4f (dark green); bold numbers share the same colour.
- Version string updated to v4.2.1 throughout.
- All other features, buttons, and logic unchanged.
Changes from v4.1.1:
- Top section: Added individual Clear buttons for Source and Target panes,
placed in the panel headers before the Font Size buttons. The shared
Clear button in the btn-row is retained.
- Bottom section Devanāgarī Pane: Added "Total lines" and "Total pairs"
counters below the text area, updating live on edits and clear.
- Bottom section Devanāgarī Pane: Placeholder text now disappears
automatically on first click/focus (placeholder behaviour), rather
than behaving like typed text requiring manual deletion.
- All other features, buttons, and logic unchanged.
